English summary · includes the ending
A complaint is made against a pike whose attacks have made life in the pond unbearable. She is caught and brought to court in a large container. Two donkeys, a weak horse and two old goats act as judges, while a fox helps conduct the case.
Rumour says that the pike often sends the fox gifts of fish at night. The narrator does not confirm whether this is true or merely a lie.
The judges examine the case. The pike's guilt cannot be hidden, and they order her to be hanged from a willow tree. Then the fox asks to speak. She argues that a more frightening punishment is needed, both for the pike and as a warning to others. She proposes drowning her in the river.
The judges praise the idea and throw the pike into the water. Their supposedly harsher punishment puts a fish back into its natural home.
