Short story

English summary · includes the ending

A hornet asks a bee why she keeps gathering honey. Her work helps people more than herself and can even put her life in danger. He thinks the bees must foolishly love eating honey too much.

The bee replies that bears and hornets like honey as well. If eating were the bees' only aim, they could steal it. Their greater pleasure, however, is gathering it. They were born for this work and will continue throughout their lives. Plenty of honey without the chance to work would make them miserable.

The author's explanation compares the hornet to people who live on the efforts of others. The bee represents a person who finds joy in work that suits their nature. Examples of animals enjoying their activity support the same idea. The fable ends with the bee's answer, while the following reflection explains why wealth alone cannot replace satisfying work.
