Tavşanın suyunun suyu

Short story

Adamlar bunu görünce ‘Bu nedir?’ diye sordular.

Hoca'nın cevabı, kendilerini tanıtırken kurdukları zincire uygundu:

‘Tavşanın suyunun suyu!’

English summary · includes the ending

A man from the countryside brings Nasreddin Hoca a hare. Hoca welcomes him politely and gives him some broth. A week later, the man returns. Hoca seems to have forgotten him and asks who he is. The visitor reminds him of the hare, and Hoca receives him again.

After several days, a group of men arrives wanting to be entertained. Asked who they are, they explain that they are neighbours of the man who brought the hare.

A few days later, an even larger group comes. These visitors describe themselves as neighbours of the neighbours of the original gift-giver. Hoca welcomes them and places a large jar of plain water before them.

They ask what it is. He replies that it is the water of the water of the hare. His answer matches their distant connection to the gift with an equally distant connection to a meal.
