Kazan doğurdu
Nasreddin Hoca, metal eşyalar yapan bir adamdan büyük bir kazan alır. Kazan, içinde yemek pişirilen büyük bir kaptır. Hoca onu daha sonra geri verecektir.
Eve gider. Kazanın içine küçük bir tencere koyar. Sonra ikisini birlikte adama götürür.
Adam sorar: «Bu küçük tencere ne?»
Hoca cevap verir: «Kazan doğurdu».
Adam küçük tencereyi alır. Hoca'nın bu sözünü kabul eder.
Bir gün Hoca yine aynı kazanı ister. Adam verir. Sonra geri gelmesini bekler. Bir gün geçer, sonra beş gün. Kazan gelmez.
Adam Hoca'nın evine gider ve kapısını çalar. Kazanını ister.
Hoca der ki: «Kazan öldü».
«Kazan nasıl ölür?», diye sorar adam.
Hoca cevap verir: «Doğurduğuna inandın. Şimdi neden öldüğüne inanmıyorsun?»
Adam ilk söze inanmış ve küçük tencereyi almıştır. Hoca şimdi aynı düşünceyle büyük kazanı geri vermemektedir.
English summary · includes the ending
Nasreddin Hoca borrows a large cooking pot from a man who makes metal goods. Before returning it, he puts a small saucepan inside. The owner asks what the smaller pot is doing there. Hoca explains that the large pot has given birth. The owner accepts the little saucepan and keeps it.
Later, Hoca borrows the large pot again. The man waits for it to come back, but a day passes, then several more, without its return. Finally, he goes to Hoca's house and asks for his property.
Hoca tells him that the pot has died. The owner objects: how can a cooking pot die? Hoca answers that, since the man believed it could give birth, he should also believe it could die.
The first impossible claim gave the owner something extra; the second takes his pot away. Hoca uses the man's acceptance of the first story to answer his objection to the second.
