Kaybolan sakal

Short story

English summary · includes the ending

A man has two wives, one old and one young. He loves both and spends alternate nights with them. In the morning, he rests his head in his wife’s lap and sleeps a little longer. His hair and beard are beginning to turn grey.

One morning, the older wife notices white hairs in his beard. She cuts out as many black hairs as she can. She hopes the younger woman will see him as old and no longer want him. She hopes he will then turn only to her.

The next morning, the younger wife cuts out the white hairs. She hopes he will feel young, lose interest in his older wife and want only her.

Some time later, the man hears people making fun of his beard. He touches it and discovers that not a single hair remains. Their opposite plans have left him without a beard.
