Hamamdaki yumurtalar

Short story

English summary · includes the ending

Some boys in Belgrade take Nasreddin Hoca with them to the public baths. Before arriving, they have secretly put several eggs in their bags. They go inside, undress and sit on a stone bench.

The boys propose a game: everyone must lay an egg, and whoever fails will have to pay the cost of the bath. They begin making noises like hens and place the eggs they brought on the bench. Their hidden preparation makes it look as if they have managed the impossible task.

Hoca sees what they are doing and gives a different animal performance. Instead of producing an egg, he makes a loud noise like a rooster. The boys ask what he means by it. Hoca answers that, where there are so many hens, a rooster is needed too.

His reply uses their own pretend farmyard to answer the trick. The anecdote ends with this answer, without saying who finally pays.
