English summary · includes the ending
A falcon accuses a rooster and his kind of being ungrateful to humans. People prepare their food and protect them, so the birds can live without searching for something to eat. Yet, when people call them, they escape from one roof to another.
The falcon compares this behaviour with that of his own kind. Although falcons are wild birds, they become loyal after only a few days with humans. They bring people the animals they catch and return at a call, even from far away.
The rooster accepts the description but explains the difference. Falcons have never seen one of their own kind being cooked in a pan. Chickens have seen other chickens being roasted. If falcons had seen the same thing happen to their own kind, they too would avoid humans. They would escape from mountain to mountain, rather than merely from roof to roof.
