Kuyudaki ay

Short story

English summary · includes the ending

Nasreddin Hoca goes to a well to draw water. Looking down, he sees the moon reflected on the water and believes that the moon itself has fallen into the well. He decides that he must pull it out.

He goes home to get a rope and a hook. Back at the well, he lowers them into the water. The hook catches on a stone, but Hoca pulls hard on the rope, trying to complete his rescue. He pulls once, then again. On the second attempt, the rope breaks and he falls onto his back.

From that position, he looks up and sees the moon in the sky. He praises the result of his effort, saying that, although he has suffered a great deal of pain, the moon has returned to its proper place.

The moon never left the sky. Hoca's change of viewpoint, brought about by his fall, provides the evidence he takes as proof of success.
