Djävulen hade gjort arbetet, men Gud fick tacken.
English summary · includes the ending
In spring, a farmer takes his cow out to graze and asks God to protect her. The devil is sitting in a bush nearby and hears the prayer. He complains to himself that people always thank God when things go well but blame him whenever there is trouble.
A few days later, the cow wanders into a swamp. When the farmer finds her, he immediately blames the devil. The devil, still nearby, recognises exactly the reaction he expected.
The farmer leaves to fetch people who can help pull the cow out. While he is away, the devil comes out of the bush and rescues her himself. He hopes that this time the farmer will have a reason to thank him.
But when the farmer returns and finds his cow standing safely on dry ground, he thanks God. Even the devil’s own good deed has brought gratitude to somebody else.
