Medveď a líška

Short story

Medveď stál pri potoku a trel sa o strom. Mal v srsti blchy. Silno ho hrýzli a na boku už mal krv.

Aj líška mala blchy. Videla medveďa a povedala mu, že to nerobí dobre. Potom priniesla v ústach trochu suchej trávy.

S trávou v ústach vošla do potoka. Pomaly si ponárala telo do vody, najprv zadné nohy. Blchy nechceli byť vo vode. Bežali po jej tele stále vyššie.

Líška sa ponorila až po oči. Všetky blchy už boli na suchej tráve v jej ústach. Pustila trávu a voda ju odniesla aj s blchami. Líška vyšla z potoka bez nich.

Medveď to videl a povedal si: „Rozum pomôže viac ako sila.“

English summary · includes the ending

A bear stands beside a stream, rubbing himself against a tree. Fleas are biting him so badly that his side is bleeding. A fox has the same problem. She sees what the bear is doing, calls his method foolish, and tries a different approach.

The fox carries a little dry grass in her mouth and enters the stream. She lowers the back of her body into the water first, then slowly goes deeper. The fleas move up her body to escape the water. As more of her body goes under, they have less dry space left. When she is in the water up to her eyes, all the fleas gather on the grass in her mouth.

She lets go of the grass, which floats away with the fleas. The fox leaves the stream free of them. Watching her, the bear admits that intelligence can achieve more than strength.
