Baba a čert

Short story

Takto neprestajne behal medzi stodolou a stolíkom.

Keď košeľu dokončila, ukázala ju súperovi a vyzvala ho, aby predviedol svoju prácu.

English summary · includes the ending

An old woman is sewing beside a window when a devil arrives and proposes a contest. They will each make a shirt. If he finishes first, he will take her soul; if she wins, he will pay her a hundred gold coins. She agrees and gives him cloth, thread and a needle.

The devil sits at another open window and uses an extremely long thread. For every stitch, he must jump outside, wind it around the barn, unwind it and return to the room. He keeps running between the table and the barn.

The woman ignores his activity and works quickly with short threads. When she shows him her finished shirt, he has not completed even half of his own.

Recognising that she has won, the devil pours a hundred coins onto the table. In shame and anger, he then dissolves into the greasy substance used on cart wheels.
