Baba a čert
Stará žena sedela pri okne a šila. Priletel k nej čert a navrhol jej stávku: kto z nich skôr ušije košeľu? Žena sa opýtala, o čo sa stavia.
Čert povedal, že ak skončí prvý, dostane jej dušu. Ak bude rýchlejšia ona, zaplatí jej sto zlatých mincí. Žena prijala stávku a podala mu látku, ihlu a klbko nití.
Čert si sadol k druhému otvorenému oknu. Do ihly si navliekol nesmierne dlhú niť.
On zatiaľ neušil ani polovicu.
Musel uznať jej víťazstvo. Vysypal na stôl sto zlatých mincí a od hanby a hnevu sa zmenil na mastnú látku na natieranie vozových kolies.
English summary · includes the ending
An old woman is sewing beside a window when a devil arrives and proposes a contest. They will each make a shirt. If he finishes first, he will take her soul; if she wins, he will pay her a hundred gold coins. She agrees and gives him cloth, thread and a needle.
The devil sits at another open window and uses an extremely long thread. For every stitch, he must jump outside, wind it around the barn, unwind it and return to the room. He keeps running between the table and the barn.
The woman ignores his activity and works quickly with short threads. When she shows him her finished shirt, he has not completed even half of his own.
Recognising that she has won, the devil pours a hundred coins onto the table. In shame and anger, he then dissolves into the greasy substance used on cart wheels.
