Short story

English summary · includes the ending

A huge stone lies in a town square. It takes up space and makes travel through the town difficult, so engineers are asked how to remove it and what the work will cost. One suggests using gunpowder to break it up, then carrying the pieces away. His price is eight thousand rubles. Another proposes moving the whole stone on a large roller for six thousand.

A peasant offers to clear the square for just one hundred rubles. Asked how, he explains that he will dig a large hole beside the stone, spread the earth across the square, push the stone into the hole and cover it. The surface will then be level.

He carries out this simple plan. He receives the hundred rubles he requested and another hundred for his clever idea. The stone no longer blocks traffic, although it has never left the square.
