English summary · includes the ending
A monkey, a donkey, a goat and a bear decide to perform music together. They obtain the written music and four string instruments, then sit in a meadow under some trees. They hope to impress the world, but their playing sounds terrible.
The monkey blames their seating arrangement. She tells them to move so that particular instruments face each other. They follow her instructions and try again, without success. The donkey then suggests sitting side by side in a single row. This arrangement does not improve their music either.
As they argue more fiercely about their places, a nightingale flies towards the noise. They ask him to put their group in order. Since they already have music and instruments, they think he only needs to explain where each player should sit.
The nightingale identifies their real problem: musicians need skill and a good musical ear. Changing seats will never give them those abilities.
