English summary · includes the ending
A crayfish, a frog and a pike decide to move a sack full of wheat from the bank into a pond. All three attach themselves to the sack and pull. They are taking part in the same task, but their movements do not work together.
The crayfish moves backwards, the frog jumps upwards and the pike struggles hard. Although the animals are making an effort, the sack does not move. The narrator says he does not know which animal is to blame. He does know the result: the sack never reaches the pond and stays where it was.
Donici ends by comparing this failed task with human life. When people in a community do not act together, they cannot finish their work successfully and peacefully. The story gives a simple picture of a shared task that fails because the participants' efforts do not follow a common direction.
