Iarna pe uliță
Ninsoarea s-a oprit.
O femeie bătrână s-a oprit.
English summary · includes the ending
After the snow stops, village children race downhill on sledges, shout, laugh and quarrel. A tiny boy appears in an enormous coat and hat. His mother has sent him on an errand, and he walks seriously, feeling like a grown man.
He spots the noisy group and tries to go around it, but the children have already seen him. They crowd around, making jokes about his huge hat. Some push him downhill while others pretend to defend him.
An old woman stops and offers her hand to lead him away. Instead of calming the children, her intervention draws her into their crowd. She scolds them and waves her stick to make room, but they keep returning.
The noisy procession moves along with the woman in its middle. Dogs jump towards them, women look over fences, and old men come outside. The street sounds like an army passing, although it is only a crowd of mischievous children.
