English summary · includes the ending
Two men who tell lies are talking together. One asks his friend whether he can see a tall, bright tower. When the friend says yes, the first man asks another question: can he also see a little mouse walking at the very top?
The friend calls this an enormous lie. He can hardly see the tower itself, so he could not possibly see such a tiny animal there.
However, he then makes an even stranger claim. Although he cannot see the mouse, he can hear its footsteps clearly. They sound as loud as a drum, as if the mouse had a bell hanging around its neck.
The first man replies that he believes him. But his attempt to fool his friend has failed: the other liar has answered his story with an even greater lie. Instead of finding someone easy to deceive, he has met his match.
