Os peixes do guardião

Short story

Este come grandes bocados.

English summary · includes the ending

A group of friars are eating together in their dining room. One of them receives a very small fish. Looking around, he notices that the head of the community has a much larger fish on his plate and is enjoying generous mouthfuls.

The friar wants to answer this unequal treatment. He lowers his head over the little fish and moves his mouth as if he were having a private conversation with it. The community's head sees him from the end of the table and asks what he is doing.

The friar says he was asking the fish whether it had ever met his father, who drowned at sea. According to his explanation, the little fish answered that it was too small to know. The large fish on the other plate, however, might know more and be able to tell him everything.

The story ends with this pointed reply. The imaginary conversation lets the friar compare the two portions without making a direct demand for more food.
