O cego e o mealheiro
English summary · includes the ending
A blind man saves coins given to him by others. He keeps them in a pot buried beneath a fig tree in his garden. Whenever he adds more, he digs up the pot, counts the money and hides it again. A neighbour watches, discovers the hiding place and steals everything.
The blind man quietly thinks about how to recover his savings. Suspecting the neighbour, he tells him a private story: he is ill, has no relatives and plans to leave his money to this helpful neighbour. He describes the pot under the tree and says he will add some other coins that he has kept elsewhere.
The neighbour returns the stolen money that night, hoping to take the extra coins as well. The blind man later finds the pot and brings it home. He then loudly tells the neighbour that everything has been stolen. Afterwards, he keeps his savings in a place nobody can find.
