O reformador do mundo

Short story

— disse. — E aquela abóbora enorme cresce numa planta baixa, no chão.

English summary · includes the ending

Américo Pisca-Pisca believes that the world is badly organised. In an orchard, he notices a large jabuticaba tree with tiny fruits and a low plant carrying a huge pumpkin. He thinks that the sizes should be the other way round. If he could improve nature, pumpkins would grow on the big trees, while the small fruits would grow near the ground.

After explaining his plan, he lies down in the shade and falls asleep. He dreams about the wonderful world he has created. Suddenly, a jabuticaba falls onto his nose and wakes him.

As he walks home, Américo understands the danger in his own suggestion. If a pumpkin had fallen instead of the little fruit, he could have been killed. He decides that nature is not so badly organised after all. He continues blinking, as his nickname suggests, but gives up trying to correct the natural world.
