O macaco e o gato

Short story

Bichano começou a tirar as castanhas. Simão mostrava qual tirar primeiro e comia todas.

— respondeu Bichano. — Você comeu tudo. Eu fiz o trabalho, corri perigo e continuo com fome. A cozinheira ainda pode me bater!

Simão respondeu:

— A vida é assim. Quem faz a comida nem sempre é quem come.

English summary · includes the ending

Simão the monkey and Bichano the cat live in the same house and cause plenty of trouble. Although they work together, Simão usually finds a way to take the best share. One day, the cook leaves twelve chestnuts roasting while she collects herbs in the garden. The monkey praises the cat’s skill and asks him to pull the chestnuts from the fire.

Bichano does the work while Simão gives instructions and eats every chestnut. When the angry cook returns with a stick, both animals escape to the roof. Simão calls their adventure a success.

The cat disagrees. He has taken the risks, made the cook angry and eaten nothing. He also expects her to punish him later. The monkey offers a selfish answer: in life, the best food goes to the person who eats it, rather than the person who prepares it.
