As abelhas e os zangãos

Short story

— responderam as abelhas.

English summary · includes the ending

Beautiful honeycombs are found in a tree, and the male bees immediately claim them. The worker bees disagree and say that making honey is their work. The two groups take the dispute to court. There are investigations, inspections and questions for witnesses, but the case becomes more complicated instead of being solved.

During the long delay, the honey turns sour and ants eat the wax. Tired of waiting for justice, both sides ask a sensible tortoise for help. He suggests a practical test: each group must make similar honeycombs near him. He will compare their work with the disputed combs to identify the true owner.

The bees are ready to begin at once. The males, however, fall silent and leave, disappointed. Their reaction settles what the arguments could not. The story ends with a clear lesson: making a claim is not enough; you must provide proof.
