Stefek Burczymucha

Short story

Siedziała i gryzła serek.

English summary · includes the ending

Stefek Burczymucha spends his days boasting about his courage. He says that he fears no animal: he could face a bear, defeat wolves and fight tigers. A lion, he claims, is only a large kitten. He even announces plans to catch a whale. Yet he carefully avoids the dog Bryś, explaining that he dislikes barking.

One day, Stefek falls asleep on some hay. When he wakes, he sees an animal eating his breakfast. Suddenly terrified, he runs to his father, shouting that there is a tiger.

Questioned by his father, he changes his account. Perhaps it was a lion, with terrible hooves, three or four legs, a huge mouth and horns. He says it was on the hay and took his breakfast.

His father and all the servants go to look. They find a tiny field mouse quietly nibbling the cheese. The real animal is very different from Stefek's frightening description.
