Bajka o sowie

Short story

— My jesteśmy ślepi? A któż widzi lepiej?

English summary · includes the ending

An owl announces that all birds are stupid. The birds who hear this hide in the bushes. The narrator observes that birds have pride too. However, one old starling is braver than the others. He whistles, jumps in front of the owl and asks why she criticises everyone.

The owl says the other birds are blind. The starling questions this and asks who can see better. She proudly answers that she can see at night without help from the sun. Her unusual ability is the reason she offers for her judgment.

The starling replies that seeing differently from everyone else is no reason to boast. He is willing to accept that she may be wise, but says her wisdom is hidden in darkness. Meanwhile, everyone repeats that an owl is stupid during the day. The fable ends with his answer, without describing any further reply or change in the owl.
