Het vroege kievitsei

Short story

‘Geef me het hele bedrag, meneer.

English summary · includes the ending

In March, Piet Smul boards a boat travelling from Leiden to The Hague. While he waits near the cabin, a passing burst of bad weather gives way to sunshine. A boy comes running up and offers a lapwing’s egg for sale.

Piet remarks that the egg is early for the season. He is willing to buy it, but offers only half the boy’s price. The boy asks for the full amount and says that Piet can take the little basket with the egg. They agree on the deal.

The boat is pushed away from the bank. Only then does the boy call after his customer with something he almost forgot to mention. Piet should not make the cooking fire too hot: the boy’s grandmother already boiled the egg last year.

The story ends with this unexpected information. The supposedly early egg is not a new egg at all.
