De pruimenboom

Short story

Niemand ziet mij.

English summary · includes the ending

Jantje sees a tree covered with plums as large as eggs. He seems ready to pick some, although his father has forbidden it. He tells himself that neither his father nor the gardener is there to see him. With so much fruit on the tree, surely nobody would notice five or six missing plums.

Then he changes his mind. He wants to obey his father and will not break the rule for a handful of fruit. He leaves the plums alone and walks away.

However, his father has quietly been listening. He meets Jantje on the middle path and calls him over with loving words. Now he will pick some plums for his son himself.

The father shakes the tree, and Jantje quickly gathers the fallen fruit. He receives enough plums to fill his whole hat. With his hat full of fruit, he runs away.
