“Koekoek! Koekoek!”
English summary · includes the ending
A nightingale and a cuckoo compete for the singing prize of their valley. The cuckoo proposes a judge with very large ears, suggesting that he should be able to listen well. This judge turns out to be a donkey.
The nightingale sings while the donkey makes a low sound, stretches and yawns. The wind, the woods and the flowing water become silent during the song. The donkey finally says that it is not bad, but complains that it is too wild and does not keep a steady rhythm.
Then he listens to the cuckoo, who repeats the same call again and again. The donkey immediately praises this performance and declares the cuckoo the winner. He explains that its regular rhythm is something he can understand. It is also pleasant to fall asleep to. He does not like the other bird’s more complicated style, which he describes as Greek.
