Boerke Naas
English summary · includes the ending
Farmer Naas sells two cattle for six hundred francs. Before walking home, he buys and loads a pistol that can fire seven shots. A robber attacks him, knocks him down and demands his money at gunpoint.
Naas says his wife will think he has spent the money on drink. He asks the robber to shoot through his hat so he can prove that he was robbed and nearly killed. The robber agrees. Naas then asks for shots through his coat and trousers as further proof, and the robber fires again.
At last, the robber demands the money, saying he has no time or bullets left. Naas replies that he still has bullets and draws his own pistol. He orders the robber to leave and threatens to shoot if he approaches. Next time, the man should bring his brains along.
The robber runs away extremely fast. Naas may lack courage, but he certainly is not foolish.
