Short story

English summary · includes the ending

Mr Kim dislikes working, although he has a wife and four children to support. One day his wife sends him into the mountains to find something for the family. He discovers an enormous stone Buddha with a pear tree growing from its head. A single pear is almost as big as a person’s head.

Kim climbs the plants covering the statue, but its smooth face stops him from reaching the fruit. He crawls inside one nostril, hoping to find a way to the top. The statue suddenly sneezes, throwing him into some bushes. He loses consciousness and does not wake until sunset.

The pear is lying beside him. The statue’s sneeze shook its head and made the fruit fall. Kim happily takes it home. That evening the family shares the large pear while he tells them about his extraordinary adventure. He gets the fruit, although his climb did not go as planned.
