Short story

English summary · includes the ending

White Whiskers is a proud, powerful tiger who works for the Mountain Spirit. One winter day, he meets a hungry rabbit on a frozen river and threatens to eat it. The rabbit hides its fear and promises a much larger meal by driving other animals towards him.

It tells the tiger to lie down, close his eyes, and stay still while it makes a circle of dry grass. If he opens his eyes, it says, the special power will fail. Tired and hungry, the tiger agrees and falls asleep.

The rabbit piles grass around him, sets it alight, and escapes. When the tiger wakes at the crackling sound, the rabbit calls out that he must keep his promise.

The tiger finally jumps clear of the flames, but burns a paw and badly damages his beautiful fur. Other tigers laugh at him. The Mountain Spirit no longer trusts such a foolish servant, and the tiger loses his high position.
