English summary · includes the ending
On a warm spring day, a mother boards a ferry with her two small children. A samurai arrives just before departure and soon falls asleep. The children laugh at his nodding head, but their mother quiets them because she fears making him angry.
Later, both children ask for a sweet. Their mother discovers that she has only one left. She promises to buy more when they arrive, but neither child will stop asking for it.
The samurai opens his eyes. When he draws his sword and approaches, the mother thinks he intends to kill the children for disturbing his sleep. She tries to protect them.
Instead, he demands the sweet, places it on the edge of the boat and cuts it into two pieces. He gives one piece to each child, then returns to his place and falls asleep again. His frightening action turns out to be a simple way of sharing.
