La pietra e l'acciarino

Short story

English summary · includes the ending

A stone is being struck by a metal tool made for starting fires. This treatment astonishes it, and it speaks harshly to the tool. It asks what gives the tool the right to cause it such trouble. It tells the tool to stop: there must be a mistake, because the stone has never harmed anyone.

The tool asks the stone to be patient. It promises that something wonderful will come from the stone itself. After hearing this, the stone becomes calm and patiently bears the blows. It sees fire appear, with the power to be useful in countless ways.

Leonardo explains that the fable concerns people who become frightened at the beginning of their studies. Once they learn to direct themselves and give patient, continuing effort to their work, remarkable results can follow. The stone's experience provides an image for this process: difficulty comes first, and the surprising result appears afterwards.
