Oretta e il racconto

Short story

Oretta vive a Firenze.

Sarà come andare a cavallo».

Oretta accetta volentieri. L'uomo comincia.

Comincia invece a raccontarne altre.

English summary · includes the ending

Oretta is a well-spoken woman from Florence and the wife of Geri Spina. During a stay in the countryside, she invites several women and men to a meal. Afterwards, they walk together. Their destination is some distance away.

One of the men offers to make the journey easier with a wonderful story. He compares listening to his tale to riding a horse instead of walking. Oretta welcomes the offer.

The story itself is good, but the man tells it badly. He repeats words, goes backwards, corrects himself and confuses the characters' names. His way of speaking also fails to suit the people and events he describes. Listening becomes increasingly uncomfortable for Oretta.

Finally, she says that his horse has a very rough movement and asks to get off. The man understands her joke. He accepts it cheerfully, leaves the first story unfinished and moves on to other tales.
