La neve

Short story

English summary · includes the ending

A small patch of snow rests on a rock at the top of a very high mountain. It can see much larger amounts of snow below and wonders whether its high position makes it seem proud. It feels that such a small amount does not deserve that place.

It remembers other patches that the sun melted the day before. In its view, they were too high up. Hoping to escape the sun's anger, it decides to move down to a more suitable place.

The snow drops from the rock and rolls down over other snow. The lower it goes, the larger it becomes. When it finally stops on a hill, it is almost as large as the hill itself. That summer, it is the last snow to melt.

The ending reverses its small beginning. The fable presents this as an example of how humility can lead to greatness.
