Giotto e Forese
Giotto era un pittore molto bravo. I suoi quadri sembravano veri.
Viaggiavano insieme e andavano piano.
All'improvviso cominciò a piovere.
Volevano arrivare a Firenze quel giorno.
Forese cominciò a ridere.
English summary · includes the ending
Giotto is an excellent painter, and Forese is a skilled lawyer. Both live in Florence, and neither is handsome. One summer day, they meet while returning from visits to their land in the countryside. They ride slowly together on poor horses.
Sudden rain makes them seek shelter at a farmer's house. The farmer knows them both. When the rain continues, they borrow old clothes and hats because they want to reach Florence that day. Back on the road, they become wet and muddy. As the weather improves, they begin to talk.
Forese laughs at Giotto's appearance and asks whether a stranger could recognise him as the world's best painter. Giotto replies that this would happen when the stranger looked at Forese and thought he could read. Forese recognises his mistake: he has mocked someone else's poor appearance while looking just as bad himself. Giotto has answered one joke with another.
