Cesca e lo specchio

Short story

Continua a pensare come prima.

English summary · includes the ending

Cesca is a young woman who thinks very highly of herself. Although she is attractive, she believes she is better than everyone else. She criticises every man and woman she meets, but never considers her own unpleasant behaviour.

One holiday, she comes home early and sits beside her uncle, Fresco. He asks why she has returned so soon. Cesca says that the streets are full of annoying people. She cannot bear to look at any of them, so she has come home to avoid them.

Fresco dislikes her proud and difficult manner. He tells her that, if unpleasant people trouble her so much, she should never look in a mirror. His advice is really a criticism of Cesca herself.

However, she completely misses his meaning. She simply says that she wants to use a mirror like other women. The story ends with her opinion of herself unchanged.
