Az üres és a megrakott kocsi

Short story

English summary · includes the ending

King Mátyás travels through the country to settle matters fairly. On one journey, his cart is full of goods and is pulled by only two weak horses. A prince approaches from the opposite direction in an empty carriage pulled by six horses. The prince refuses to make room for the loaded cart.

Mátyás gets up, approaches him and opens his outer coat. He shows the gold-decorated clothes beneath it, revealing that he is the king.

He then orders two of the prince’s horses to be taken from the carriage and attached to his own cart. Four horses are enough for an empty carriage, he says. He also orders the prince to move aside.

The tale explains this as the beginning of the custom that an empty cart gives way to a loaded one. His answer concerns both the use of the horses and which vehicle should make room on the road.
