A páva és a daru
Egyszer egy páva vendégül hívott egy darut. Miután jóllaktak, arról kezdtek vitatkozni, melyikük kapott jobb ajándékokat a természettől.
A páva felemelte a farkát, hogy megmutassa szép, színes tollait.
– Mi vagy te hozzám képest? – kérdezte. – Nézd a kék mellemet! Még a fejemen is olyanok a tollak, mint egy korona. Te csak egy csúnya, szürke madár vagy.
A daru elismerte, hogy vendéglátója valóban gyönyörű.
– De mi hasznod van ebből? – folytatta. – A szép tollaiddal nem tudsz magasra repülni. Lent kell maradnod a földön, a sárban. Az én szürke tollaim viszont felvisznek az égbe. Onnan fentről örömmel nézem a világot.
English summary · includes the ending
A peacock invites a crane to a meal. After eating, they argue about the gifts nature has given them. The peacock displays his colourful tail, blue breast, and the feathers on his head. He calls the grey crane ugly and worthless beside him.
The crane agrees that the peacock is beautiful but questions the usefulness of his feathers. They cannot carry him high into the sky. The crane's plain grey feathers, however, allow him to fly up and enjoy the view below.
He adds that people collect his fallen feathers, which heroes wear on their headwear. Peacock feathers are used for fans. His reply finishes the argument; the tale does not describe an apology or a flying contest.
Heltai's explanation warns readers against looking down on others because of their own gifts. Another person may have a different quality that is more useful than the one they are proud of.
