A lúd és az aranytojás

Short story

Egy családos gazda sok ludat tartott. Az egyik minden nap egy aranytojást tojt. A gazda nagy örömét lelte benne.

Az aranytojások látványa azonban egyre nagyobb vágyat ébresztett benne az arany iránt. Töprengeni kezdett, vajon honnan származnak ezek a szép tojások.

Heltai a telhetetlenséget bírálja ezzel a mesével.

English summary · includes the ending

A farmer with a family owns many geese. One of them is very different from the others: every day, it lays a golden egg. The farmer is delighted with this useful bird.

But the sight of the golden eggs makes him want more gold. He begins to wonder where the eggs come from and decides that the goose must be full of gold inside. Instead of waiting for one egg each day, he wants to take all the gold at once.

He kills the goose by breaking its neck, then cuts it open with a sharp knife. He expects to find gold, but there is none. His desire for a larger reward has destroyed the bird that gave him a regular benefit.

Heltai closes with a warning against greed. People who are not satisfied with what they have may lose even their existing advantages while trying to obtain more. The farmer's useful goose is gone.
