English summary · includes the ending
King Mátyás and a group of nobles discuss what is most common in the world. The court jester says he knows the answer. They offer him ten forints if he answers correctly and threaten to beat him if he fails. He says that doctors are the most common people. They reject this answer and send him to his room to think again.
As soon as he enters, he lies down and begins groaning. News reaches the king that the jester is dying. The king and the nobles hurry to his room, worried about a man who has often made them laugh. Each suggests a treatment.
The jester waits until everyone has given advice. Then he jumps up and asks who has won. If there are so many doctors in one palace, he asks, how many must there be in the whole world? The story ends with his answer.
