A fiatal daru

Short story

Ősz volt. Egy csapat madár együtt repült. A legöregebb madár vezette őket. Lassan, de megállás nélkül haladtak. A fiatalabb madaraknak ez túl lassú volt.

Az egyik fiatal ezt mondta az öregnek:

– Engedj engem előre! Így csak a tél végén érünk haza!

Most ő vezette a csapatot.

English summary · includes the ending

In autumn, a flock of cranes travels with its oldest bird at the front. They fly steadily but slowly. Some younger birds become impatient with the pace. The most eager young crane asks the old bird to let him take the lead. At this speed, he complains, they will not get home until the end of winter.

The young crane becomes the leader, and the whole flock flies forward very fast. However, his strength soon begins to fail. He pants, loses his early energy and struggles to breathe. He asks the old crane to forgive him and take back the leadership.

The story ends with this request and a lesson about different kinds of strength. Youth can provide the energy for quick action, but work that continues for a long time needs endurance. Fáy suggests giving that kind of responsibility to someone older and more experienced.
