Pas i vuk
U jednom gradu živio je stariji pas. Bio je dobar prema svom vlasniku. Lajao je kad je trebalo i veselo mahao repom. Vlasnik ga je volio i davao mu dobru hranu. Obojica su bila zadovoljna.
Jednog vrućeg ljetnog dana vlasnik je pustio psa u šetnju.
– Idi u šumu. Tamo ima hlada, rekao je.
Psu se nije šetalo, ali je poslušao. U šumi je sreo starog vuka.
– Kako si? upitao ga je pas.
– Zdrav sam, odgovorio je vuk.
– Ali jako si mršav! Ja imam dovoljno hrane i ljeti i zimi. Dođi živjeti kod mog vlasnika. Moraš samo lajati. Dobivat ćeš meso i kruh. Imat ćeš i krov nad glavom. Vlasnik će te voljeti i nagrađivati.
Vuku se svidjela ta ponuda.
– Idemo odmah! rekao je. – Zbogom, šumo! Srne se više ne moraju bojati mene!
Krenuli su zajedno. Tada je vuk vidio krug oko psećeg vrata.
– Što je to? upitao je.
– Tu vlasnik stavlja lanac.
English summary · includes the ending
A well-fed dog meets a thin wolf in the forest. The dog describes his comfortable life with a human owner. He gets food, a roof over his head and rewards for barking. He offers to find the wolf the same kind of work. The wolf accepts at once, especially when he hears about the meat. He says goodbye to the forest and tells the deer that they no longer need to fear him.
As the two animals set off together, the wolf notices a ring around the dog’s neck. The dog explains that his owner attaches a chain to it to stop him from going away. He says it does not hurt or disturb his sleep.
This changes the wolf’s decision completely. He turns away and chooses a different path, even though it means returning to a hard and hungry life. He would rather be free and hungry than well fed and chained.
