Gavran i lija
Jedan crni gavran ukrao je komad bijelog sira. Sjeo je s njime na vrh hrasta. Pritom je s grane srušio nekoliko žirova, plodova tog stabla. Pali su na gladnu lisicu koja je bila ispod njega.
Lisica je podigla pogled i ugledala pticu sa sirom u kljunu. Nasmijala se i oblizala.
– Visoko si, sire, ali past ćeš ti meni! rekla je.
Zagladila je dlaku oko ušiju i počela govoriti gavranu vrlo ljubaznim glasom:
– Prekrasna ptico, ti si kralj svih ptica! Stojiš na tom stablu i sjajiš poput zvijezde. Sve ti se životinje dive. Tvoje perje tako blista da jedva mogu gledati. Sram me što ja imam samo obično crveno krzno.
Zatim ga je zamolila da zapjeva:
– Govorim u ime šumskih životinja. Razveseli nas pjesmom! Ako ti je perje tako lijepo, sigurno ti je i glas prekrasan!
Gavran je čvrsto držao sir. Ali nakon tolikih pohvala postao je silno ponosan. Otvorio je kljun i počeo se glasno javljati. Sir je pao ravno lisici u šape.
Gavran se i dalje glasao, želeći pokazati svoj glas. A lisica se ispod hrasta smijala:
– Meni sir, a tebi lekcija! Da nema glupih ptica, ne bi bilo ni onih koji ih hvale samo radi vlastite koristi.

A black raven steals a piece of white cheese and settles at the top of an oak tree. As he lands, he knocks some acorns onto a hungry fox below. She looks up, sees the cheese and decides to get it.
After smoothing her fur, the fox praises the raven. She calls him the king of birds and says that the whole forest admires his beautiful feathers. She pretends to feel ashamed of her own appearance beside him. Then, claiming to speak for the other animals, she asks him to sing. With such wonderful feathers, she says, he must have a wonderful voice too.
The proud raven opens his beak and begins to call. The cheese falls straight into the fox’s paws. While he continues showing off his voice, she laughs. She gets the cheese, while he gets a lesson: without foolish birds, there would be nobody for dishonest flatterers to trick.
