शेर और खरगोश
एक जंगल में एक शेर रहता था। वह हर दिन एक जानवर खाता था। जानवरों को बारी-बारी से उसके पास जाना पड़ता था।
एक दिन खरगोश की बारी आई। वह शेर का खाना नहीं बनना चाहता था। वह रास्ते में देर करता रहा। आखिर जब वह शेर के पास पहुँचा, तब बहुत देर हो चुकी थी। शेर उसकी तरफ झपटा।
खरगोश ने कहा, “मुझे देर हुई, लेकिन मेरी गलती नहीं है। जंगल में एक और शेर है। वह कहता है कि वही यहाँ का मालिक है। मैंने कहा कि मैं आपके पास जा रहा हूँ, तो वह गुस्सा हो गया।”
“मुझे उसके पास ले चलो!” शेर गरजा। “मैं उसे दिखाता हूँ कि जंगल का मालिक कौन है!”
खरगोश उसे एक कुएँ के पास ले गया। उसने नीचे देखकर कहा, “वह अभी यहीं था।”
शेर ने कुएँ में देखा। पानी में उसे अपना चेहरा दिखा, लेकिन वह समझा कि यह दूसरा शेर है। उसने सिर हिलाया, तो पानी वाले शेर ने भी सिर हिलाया। वह गरजा, तो कुएँ से भी गरजने की आवाज़ आई।
शेर उससे लड़ने के लिए कुएँ में कूद गया और मर गया। अब जंगल के जानवर शांति से रह सकते थे। उन्होंने एक गीत बनाया: छोटा खरगोश अपनी बुद्धि से जीत गया, और शेर अपनी मूर्खता से कुएँ में गिरकर मर गया।

A lion eats one forest animal every day. The animals must come to him in turn. When a hare is called, he delays because he does not want to be eaten. The lion is angry when he finally arrives.
The hare blames another lion in the forest. This second lion claims to rule the forest and says the first lion is nobody. Furious at the challenge, the lion demands to see his rival. The hare leads him to a well and says the other lion was there just a moment ago.
Looking into the water, the lion sees his own reflection. When he shakes his mane, the other lion does the same. When he roars, the well echoes his voice. He jumps in to attack and dies. The other animals can now live in peace. They make a song celebrating the small hare’s intelligence and the powerful lion’s foolishness.
