Short story

English summary · includes the ending

A hungry jackal comes to a place in the forest where two armies have fought. A large drum lies there. The wind moves nearby branches against its skin, making a loud noise. The jackal is frightened and thinks he should leave before whatever is making the noise sees him.

Then he decides to investigate instead of running away without thinking. He slowly approaches, sees the drum and strikes it himself. His fear now changes into excitement. He imagines that such a large object must contain plenty of meat, fat and blood.

The jackal tears a hole in the tough leather and gets inside. In doing so, he breaks his teeth. Inside the drum he finds nothing to eat, only wood and leather. The object that first frightened him and then promised a feast is empty. The story warns against becoming afraid just because something makes a great noise.
