English summary · includes the ending
A gardener wants to visit a fair, but someone must water his employer's garden while he is away. He has always let the monkeys living there eat fruit, so he asks them to help him. They gladly agree, and he gives them his watering pots.
Their chief thinks the well contains little water because its opening is small. He does not understand that it is deep and has a constant supply. To save water, he orders the monkeys to pull up each plant, measure its roots, give long roots more water and short roots less, then put the plant back.
When the gardener returns, many plants are dead or dying. He weeps and calls the monkeys fools. His employer says the gardener is even more foolish: he should have known better than to leave monkeys in charge. The employer dismisses him and hires another gardener.
