English summary · includes the ending
Jacqueau is a monkey whose tricks attract crowds to his master's picture show. One day, while the master remains at a tavern, the monkey invites the animals of the town to a free performance of his own.
The audience takes its places, the magic lantern is brought in, and the shutters are closed. Jacqueau begins with a speech. The animals yawn but applaud, and he is pleased. He puts painted glass into the lantern and proudly describes pictures of the sun, the moon, and the creation of the world.
However, the room and wall remain completely dark. A cat and a dog admit that they cannot see anything. A turkey claims to see something, although not very clearly.
The monkey continues speaking beautifully without stopping. He has forgotten just one thing: to light the lantern. Florian's fable asks writers whose impressive language is hard to understand to make themselves clear.
