English summary · includes the ending

A town rat politely invites his friend from the countryside to share some excellent leftover meat. The meal is served on a carpet, and the two friends enjoy the food. Nothing seems to be missing from the feast.

While they are still eating, they hear a noise at the room’s door. The town rat immediately runs away, and the country rat follows him. Once the noise stops and the person leaves, the rats come out again. The town rat suggests that they finish their meat.

His guest refuses and invites him to the countryside the following day instead. At his own home in the countryside, nobody interrupts him during his meals, and he can eat in peace and take his time. He does not want a pleasure that fear can spoil. For him, a peaceful meal is worth more than this interrupted feast.
