Le Paon

Short story

English summary · includes the ending

The narrator presents a peacock as a bridegroom waiting for his wedding. He was ready yesterday, but his bride failed to arrive. Surely she will come today. He walks about proudly, dressed in his colourful feathers like a rich prince. Love seems to make his colours even brighter.

When the bride still does not appear, he climbs onto the roof and looks towards the sun. He calls out twice, but nobody comes or answers. The other birds are so used to his behaviour that they do not even raise their heads. They are tired of admiring him.

He returns to the courtyard, too certain of his own beauty to hold any anger against them. The wedding will take place tomorrow instead. With nothing else to do, he solemnly climbs the entrance steps and raises his long tail like a ceremonial dress. Then he practises the wedding ceremony one more time.
