Le Joujou du pauvre

Short story

English summary · includes the ending

The narrator suggests giving cheap toys to poor children during a country walk. At first, they may not trust their good luck. Then they take the gifts and run away, like cats that have learned to be careful around people.

The main scene shows a rich child standing behind the gate of a large garden. A white country house shines in the sun behind him. His beautiful, decorated toy lies in the grass, but he is not paying attention to it.

Outside the gate, a thin, dirty child shows him a very different toy. The rich child watches with great interest, as if seeing something rare. The toy is a living rat in a little cage, which the poor child shakes. The narrator guesses that his parents chose it to save money.

Although the gate separates their different worlds, the two children smile at each other like brothers. Their teeth are equally white.
